Mountain Bike Shenanigans

Warming Up
February 24th, 2011

It’s been getting warmer recently. This week I’ve ditched winter roubaix 3/4 length bib knicks in preference of non bib shorts and knee warmers. Tonight riding home I didn’t even need them and my knees had sight of the Mancunian climate for the first time this year. Bet it doesn’t last though… The weather has a habit of lulling you into a false sense of security at this time of year.

Time for Brighter Lights?
February 9th, 2011

Tonight two people tried to kill me on the way home. The first was a car that was pulling out from a side road and was at ninety degrees to the stationary traffic as I was overtaking them on the outside along the centre line. The second was a car driver who decided that they were bored with sitting in traffic and were going to turn one lane of traffic into two and pulled out to over take as I was alongside their rear passenger door. Fortunately there was nothing coming the other way so I could just swing out of the way, but FFS it’s not like they can’t say they didn’t see me coming… I’m running a Light and Motion Arc HID that pumps out 675 lumens.

Unkool Stop
February 7th, 2011

When I built up my Independent Fabrication Planet Cross it was fitted with some Kool Stop brake pads in the Paul Compent Engineering cantilevers. From the off the bike’s been plagued by an irritatingly noisy front brake, which irrespective of teh amount of toe-in refused to be tamed. I think I tried it with a 5mm difference front to back and they still squeaked. Tried cleaning the rims and filing the pads down and setting up again. No difference.

At the weekend I picked up two pairs of Madison’s Aztec pads from Harry Halls. The rear brakes which have been doing double duty and were at the end of their life so I just replaced both sets even though the fronts were nearly new. The new pads solved the squeal. Which is a relief as I was doubting bith my mechanic skills and the alignment of my forks… Thing is now I need to fit a bell.
